Text and styles

Updated on August 5, 2026

Imagine has two ways to add text to the canvas and a properties panel to customize the appearance of any object. Here is how each one works.

Adding a text box

Select the Text tool and click on the canvas to place a text box. Type directly inside it. The Text panel that appears alongside lets you change:

  • Color of the text.
  • Background (or enable Transparent background to remove it).
  • Font: Sans, Serif, or Mono.
  • Size.
  • Bold and Italic.
  • Alignment: Align left, Align center, or Align right.
  • Shape: you can wrap the box in an outline — None, Rectangle, Circle, Ellipse, Triangle, Pentagon, Hexagon, Octagon, Diamond, or Parallelogram.
  • Border width and Border color when a shape is active.

You can also add a text box by right-clicking on the canvas and choosing Add Text Box.

Adding a label

A Label connects a floating tag to an anchor point with a leader line. Activate the Label tool from the Advanced shapes menu and click on the canvas. The Label panel lets you adjust:

  • Text color and Line color.
  • Line width.
  • Bullet: Dot, Arrow, or None.
  • Alignment: Auto (smart flip), Left, Center, or Right.
  • Border, Border width, and Border color.
  • Auto distance or a manual Line distance.
  • Manual placement or Suggest placement automatically.

The Properties panel

When you select a stroke or a shape drawn with the pen, the Properties panel appears. From there you can change:

  • Stroke color.
  • Stroke width.

The Properties panel shows Mixed when selected objects have different values from each other.

Applying changes to multiple objects

Select several elements at once (with Shift+click or by dragging a selection rectangle) and the corresponding properties panel shows the available controls. Any change you make applies to all selected objects simultaneously.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit the text of multiple text boxes at once? Text content is edited box by box. What you can change in bulk is the style (color, font, size, bold, italic, alignment).

Does the text box shape affect how text flows inside? No, the shape is a decorative outline around the box. Text always wraps within the internal rectangular area.

Can I change the fill color of a shape drawn with the pen? Use the Paint bucket tool on the closed shape to fill it with any color you want.

Does the Properties panel also appear for images? No, the Properties panel with stroke color and width only appears for strokes and elements that have a stroke style. Images have their own resize behavior.
