Timeline and steps

Updated on August 5, 2026

Once you have several camera bookmarks, you may want to change their order, combine two ideas into a single step, or remove one you no longer need. The Sequence editor is where you do all of that.

Reordering steps

In the Sequence bar at the bottom of the editor you can see all your bookmarks as horizontal chips. On desktop, drag them left or right to change their position in the narrative.

For more precise control, open the Sequence editor by clicking the settings icon next to the step counter. Inside the editor, each step appears as a row that you can also drag to reorder.

Merging two steps into one

If two steps form a single idea, you can combine them:

  1. Open the Sequence editor.
  2. Check the box next to the steps you want to join (you can select more than two).
  3. Click Merge.

The selected steps become a single step that groups all their content. The operation can be undone with Undo (Ctrl+Z).

Splitting a step

If a step groups content you would rather show separately:

  1. Open the Sequence editor.
  2. Check the box next to the step you want to split.
  3. Click Split.

The step breaks apart into its individual parts. You can only split one step at a time.

Deleting steps

In the Sequence editor, each row has a delete button on the far right. You can also select multiple steps and remove them from the action bar that appears when items are selected.

If you delete a canvas element that was referenced in the sequence, Imagine automatically cleans up the orphaned steps and shows you a notice: Sequence updated.

Auto-framing

The Auto-framing button in the sequence controls bar makes the camera jump automatically to the matching bookmark each time you advance a step during preview. When enabled, you don't need to navigate between bookmarks manually — the presentation moves on its own.

You can also enable Auto-build, which generates the step sequence automatically based on the order in which you drew elements on the canvas. This is useful for presentations where each stroke or shape should appear progressively.

If you delete or move a canvas element, check the sequence in the Sequence editor to make sure the steps are still consistent with the content.

Frequently asked questions

Can I undo a merge or a split? Yes. Use Undo (Ctrl+Z) right after merging or splitting to revert the operation.

Is the reordering saved automatically? Changes in the Sequence editor are only saved when you click Save. If you close the editor without saving, the changes are discarded.

How many steps can I have at most? There is no fixed limit. However, very long sequences can make the presentation harder to follow. Try to make sure each step conveys a clear idea.

Next step

  • Presentation mode — how to present the sequence fullscreen.
  • Telling with steps — what a step is and why gradually revealing content works better.
  • Exporting — save your presentation as a video, PDF or image.
