Trash and recovery

Updated on August 5, 2026

When you delete a card or deck in EON, it does not disappear immediately. It goes to trash first, where you can recover it if you made a mistake. Only when you permanently delete it from trash is it gone for good.

What happens when you delete a card

From the deck view you can delete a card in two ways:

  • Right-click the card and choose Delete card (or select several with Ctrl + click and use the Delete button in the action bar).
  • During a review session, open Card options and choose Delete card. The app asks you to confirm: "Are you sure you want to move this card to trash?"

In both cases the card moves to trash. Its review schedule is frozen while it stays there.

What happens when you delete a deck

From the sidebar right-click the deck and choose Move Deck to Trash. The deck and all its cards (including subdecks) go to trash. While in trash, they do not appear in the review queue or in the Deck Pack counters.

How to restore

Open the Trash view from the Deck Pack sidebar. You will see two sections: deleted decks and deleted cards.

  • To restore an item, press Restore next to it.
  • The deck or card returns to its original location with its review schedule resumed from where it left off.

Trash does not have a documented auto-expiry period. To be safe, restore items before permanently deleting them.

How to permanently delete

In the Trash view press Delete Permanently next to any item. The app asks for confirmation with the item's name and warns that "This action cannot be undone". Once confirmed, the item is gone forever.

Deleting during a review session

You can delete a card in the middle of a session without interrupting it. EON moves it to trash and continues with the next card. The card will appear in the Deck Pack's Trash view when you exit the session.

Frequently asked questions

Does trash empty automatically? The code does not document an automatic time limit. Items stay in trash until you permanently delete them or restore them.

Can I restore a deck if some of its cards were already permanently deleted? When you restore the deck, it comes back with all the cards that were still in trash at that moment. Cards you already permanently deleted cannot be recovered.

Does permanent deletion affect the review history? Yes. Once permanently deleted, the card and all its history are gone.
