Editing the summary outline

Updated on August 5, 2026

The outline AI proposes is not final: you can adjust it before the content is generated. It is worth spending a few minutes here, because the structure of the outline directly determines how the summary turns out.

Why you should adjust the outline before generating

AI generates the content of each section independently. If the outline has redundant, too broad, or out-of-order sections, the final summary will reflect that. Fixing the structure now is much faster than regenerating the entire summary afterward.

How to edit topics

In step 2 of the New summary modal you will find the Generated table of contents panel. Each row in the outline is a topic you can modify in three ways:

  • Edit the title: click the edit icon next to the topic (tooltip Edit title) to type whatever name you want.
  • Move a topic: drag the row by the drag handle (tooltip Move topic) to change its position in the outline. Dragging is not available on touch screens or mobile devices.
  • Delete a topic: click the delete icon (tooltip Delete topic) to remove that section from the outline.

You can also insert a new topic using the insert line that appears between each pair of rows (tooltip Insert topic).

Selecting multiple topics to move or delete at once

On desktop you can select several topics at a time:

  • Ctrl + click (or Cmd on Mac) to add or remove topics from the selection.
  • Shift + click to select a continuous range of topics.

When you drag with multiple topics selected, they all move together.

Copying the outline

The copy button in the top-left corner of the panel (tooltip Copy table of contents) copies the full outline to your clipboard as plain text. This is useful if you want to edit it in another editor and then paste it back using the I already have a table of contents mode.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add child topics or sub-sections? Yes. When you insert a new topic, you can indent it to make it a child of another topic. The structure supports multiple levels of depth.

What happens if I delete all topics from the outline? The Generate summary button will not be available with an empty outline. You need at least one topic to continue.

Can I regenerate the outline if I am not happy with what AI proposed? Yes. Click the Regenerate button above the outline panel to have AI generate a new proposal for the same topic.

Does editing the outline also change which books are consulted? No. The included books are chosen in step 1 and do not change when you edit the outline. What changes is which sections are generated and in what order.

Next step

  • Summaries — return to the full summary creation flow.
  • Citations and traceability — understand how citations are used within each summary section.
  • Cross-book summaries — combine several sources in a single thematic summary.
