Tags and organization

Updated on August 5, 2026

Tags let you group your books in whatever way makes sense to you: by subject, by project, by reading status, or any other criteria.

Adding tags to a book

  1. Click the book to open its detail panel.
  2. In the Tags section, click Add.
  3. Type the tag name and press Enter, or click Add again.

You can add multiple tags to the same book. Use short, descriptive names.

Removing a tag

In the detail panel, each tag has an X button on its right. Click it to remove the tag from the book. The tag disappears immediately with no confirmation prompt.

Filtering by tag

In the left sidebar of the library you will find the Tags section listing all the tags you have created. Click a tag to show only books that have it. To see your whole library again, tap the X that appears in the toolbar next to the active filter.

Title and author matter

The title and author of each book are the fields Theca uses to identify it in summaries and citations. If the app detected them incorrectly when you uploaded the file, you can correct them:

  1. Open the book's detail panel.
  2. Click directly on the title or the author name.
  3. Edit the text and confirm.

Having the correct title and author makes references in your summaries clearer and easier to cite.

If you plan to generate summaries or study cards, make sure the title and author are correct before you start.

Filtering by format and author too

In addition to tags, the sidebar lets you filter books by Format (PDF, EPUB, TXT) or by Author. These filters work the same way as tags: one click to activate them and the X in the toolbar to remove them.

Frequently asked questions

Are tags shared between users? No. Tags are part of your personal library and only you can see them.

Can I rename an existing tag? The app does not have a rename option right now. To change a tag's name, remove the old tag and add the new one to each book.

How many tags can a book have? There is no set limit in the interface; you can assign as many as you need.

Does the tag filter affect search? No. The tag filter only changes which books are shown in the library. Search works independently in the Search section.

Next step

  • Your library — views, the toolbar, and the detail panel.
  • Indexing and OCR — what happens after you upload a book and what each status means.
  • Search your library — how to search passages across your entire collection.
